Seville have turned down an offer of £12.5 million from Tottenham Hotspur for Diego Capel, the left winger, in a deal that would have involved the Spanish club withdrawing two compensation claims. Seville claim that they are owed £3 million in compensation from Tottenham for Juande Ramos, who left for White Hart Lane in October, and they have taken action against their former head coach for breach of contract.
Capel, 20, became the Spanish club’s first-choice winger last season, scoring three times. He made his debut at 16 and helped Spain to win the European Under19 Championship in Poland two years ago. He was also part of the team who reached the quarter-finals of the Under20 World Cup in Canada last year.
Ramos took his spending this summer to just over £28 million last week when Tottenham agreed a deal to sign Heurelho Gomes from PSV Eindhoven. The goalkeeper will arrive this week to discuss personal terms. Ramos is also looking for a centre back because of concerns about how often Ledley King, the injury-prone defender, will play next season, and a forward if Dimitar Berbatov leaves.
